Crochet Dragon Pattern: Nimbus the Cloud Guardian (Chenille Amigurumi)

Dearest creator, welcome to the atelier. Today, we are not merely looping yarn; we are summoning a spirit of the sky. I am delighted to share with you the pattern for Nimbus, a gentle guardian designed to bring comfort to all who hold him.

This creation was born from a desire to capture the feeling of a safe, soft space between waking and dreaming. Whether you are a seasoned artisan or taking your first steps into the world of fantasy amigurumi, Nimbus is here to guide you.

🎨 About This Creation & Our Angle

Nimbus is designed with the "Baby Schema" in mind—large, soulful eyes and a rounded, huggable form that instantly sparks joy. We are working with plush chenille yarn to give him a cloud-like texture that is impossible to resist touching.

This project is also a masterclass in working with velvet textures. Many shy away from chenille due to "the worming effect" or shedding, but today, I will show you the secrets to taming this fiber. We are creating a piece that is not only "viral-worthy" for your social media feed but an heirloom of comfort.

"To craft Nimbus is to weave a silent promise: that soft things still exist in this sharp world, and that we have the power to create them with our own hands." — Patricia

🧶 Materials & Tools Needed

To weave this creation, you will need to gather a few simple treasures. The magic lies in the softness of the materials chosen.

  • Yarn: Super Bulky (Weight 6) Chenille/Velvet yarn. I recommend Himalaya Dolphin Baby or Bernat Velvet.
    - Main Color: Cloud White (approx. 100g)
    - Contrast Color: Midnight Teal (approx. 30g for mane)
    - Accent Colors: Slate Grey (horns/claws) and Blush Pink (nose/ears).
  • Hook: 4.0mm or 4.5mm (Use a smaller hook than recommended on the label to prevent holes).
  • Eyes: 16mm or 18mm Safety Eyes (Black).
  • Other Materials: White felt (for behind eyes), polyester fiberfill, yarn needle (large eye), stitch markers.

💡 Abbreviations & Stitches Used

We will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

  • ch - chain
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet
  • inc - increase (2 sc in one st)
  • dec - decrease (sc 2 together - see note below)
  • BLO - back loop only
  • FLO - front loop only

📖 The Complete Nimbus Pattern

Part 1: The Head (Cloud White)

We begin with the focal point of our muse: the face. We want a wide, flat snout rather than a pointed one.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in a Magic Ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: inc in every st (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (sc 1, inc) x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc) x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5: (sc 3, inc) x 6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 6: (sc 4, inc) x 6 (36 sts)
  • Rnd 7-11: sc in each st around (36 sts) - 5 rounds total

Artisan's Note: Working with chenille can be tricky. Feel for the stitches with your fingers if they are hard to see. If the Magic Ring is difficult, try chaining 2 and working 6 sc into the second chain from the hook.

  • Rnd 12: (sc 5, inc) x 6 (42 sts)
  • Rnd 13-15: sc in each st around (42 sts)
  • Rnd 16: (sc 5, dec) x 6 (36 sts)

Pause here to insert eyes. Cut two small circles of white felt (approx. 20mm). Poke a small hole in the center of the felt. Insert the safety eyes through the felt, then place them between Rounds 11 and 12, about 7 stitches apart. Secure the backings.

  • Rnd 17: (sc 4, dec) x 6 (30 sts)
  • Rnd 18: (sc 3, dec) x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 19: (sc 2, dec) x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 20: (sc 1, dec) x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 21: dec x 6 (6 sts)

Stuff the head firmly but gently, shaping it to be round and chubby. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Part 2: The Serpentine Body (Cloud White)

The body is worked as a long, continuous tube that tapers at the end.

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in a Magic Ring (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: inc in every st (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3: (sc 1, inc) x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc) x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 5-8: sc in each st around (24 sts)
  • Rnd 9: (sc 3, inc) x 6 (30 sts) - Creating the chest area
  • Rnd 10-25: sc in each st around (30 sts) - The main belly
  • Rnd 26: (sc 3, dec) x 6 (24 sts)
  • Rnd 27-45: sc in each st around (24 sts) - The long mid-section

Artisan's Note: Stuff the body as you go! Do not overstuff the mid-section; we want Nimbus to be poseable and slightly "floppy," not a stiff stick.

  • Rnd 46: (sc 2, dec) x 6 (18 sts)
  • Rnd 47-55: sc in each st around (18 sts)
  • Rnd 56: (sc 1, dec) x 6 (12 sts)
  • Rnd 57-65: sc in each st around (12 sts)
  • Rnd 66: dec x 6 (6 sts)

Fasten off, weave in ends. The tail should taper nicely.

Part 3: The Limbs & Details

Legs (Make 4 - Cloud White):

  • Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6 sts)
  • Rnd 2: inc in every st (12 sts)
  • Rnd 3-6: sc in each st around (12 sts)
  • Rnd 7: (sc 2, dec) x 3 (9 sts)
  • Stuff lightly. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

The Mane (Midnight Teal):

Instead of crocheting a separate piece, we will surface crochet directly onto the body for a natural look. Alternatively, crochet a long strip: Ch 60 (or length of body), work 3 dc in every chain to create a ruffle/curl effect. Sew this strip down the spine.

Horns (Make 2 - Slate Grey):

  • Rnd 1: 4 sc in MR (4 sts)
  • Rnd 2: (sc 1, inc) x 2 (6 sts)
  • Rnd 3: sc in each st around (6 sts)
  • Rnd 4: (sc 2, inc) x 2 (8 sts)
  • Do not stuff. Fasten off.

🧵 Assembly & Final Touches

Now, we bring the soul into the vessel. This is where patience is rewarded.

1. Head to Body: Sew the head to the wider end of the body (Rnds 1-9 area). Angle it slightly so Nimbus looks "up" at you.

2. Legs: Attach the front legs just below the neck connection. Attach the back legs about midway down the body. Splay them slightly outwards for a "crawling" posture.

3. The Mane: If you made the ruffle strip, pin it from the center of the forehead, down the neck, and all the way to the tail tip. Sew securely.

4. Facial Details: Use the Blush Pink yarn to embroider a small "Y" shape for the nose. Use Slate Grey to embroider small claws on the feet.

💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My chenille yarn keeps snapping when I pull the Magic Ring. What do I do?

A: This is common! The "Chain 2 method" is much safer for velvet yarn. Ch 2, then work your starting stitches into the first chain. It holds up much better.

Q: Can I use acrylic yarn instead?

A: Absolutely. However, Nimbus will be significantly smaller (approx. half the size) and less squishy. You may need to use a smaller hook (2.5mm - 3.0mm).

💌 A Final Word

And there you have it—a Cloud Guardian of your very own. May Nimbus sit upon your shelf or in the arms of a loved one, a gentle reminder that magic is real, as long as we have the hands to craft it. Happy stitching.
