Pattern: Fable the Flora Fawn | A Chunky Chenille Market Guide

My dear friend, welcome back to the worktable. Today we are shaping not just a toy, but a little guardian of the forest floor. Fable is designed to be soft to the touch and quick to the heart, using that luxurious velvet yarn that everyone loves to squeeze.

About This Creation & The "Velvet Goldmine"

We are working with a specific commercial angle today: The Velvet Goldmine. Chunky chenille yarn is a bit more expensive per ball, but it works up twice as fast as cotton. This means you can finish a 14cm plushie in one evening rather than three.

Fable relies on the "Baby Schema" for charm. We are using a large head, low-set eyes, and thick, sturdy limbs. This creates an immediate emotional connection. The color palette—earthy browns, creamy whites, and a pop of mossy green—evokes nature without being dull.

Project Snapshot:

๐Ÿ“Š Difficulty: Intermediate (Working with velvet requires feeling your stitches)

Est. Time: 4–5 Hours

๐Ÿ“ Size: Approx. 14cm tall (using bulky weight yarn)

"Velvet yarn hides a multitude of sins, but it demands you trust your hands more than your eyes."

Materials & Tools Needed

๐Ÿงถ Yarn: Super Bulky (Size 6) Chenille/Velvet yarn. You will need: Cocoa Brown (approx. 50g), Creamy White (approx. 30g), Moss Green (20g), Golden Yellow (10g), and a scrap of Deep Purple for the hooves.

๐Ÿชก Hook: 4.5mm or 5.0mm (We want tight tension so stuffing doesn't show)

Other Materials: 12mm Safety Eyes, Polyfill stuffing, Yarn needle (metal with a large eye is best for chenille), Stitch markers.

Rnd 17: (2 sc, dec) around. (24 sts)

Artisan's Note: Insert safety eyes now. Place them low on the White section of the face, between Rnds 12 and 13, spaced about 6 stitches apart.

Rnd 18: (1 sc, dec) around. (16 sts)

Rnd 19: Dec around. (8 sts)

Fasten off and weave in the end.

Component 2: The Snout

Using White yarn. This sits right between the eyes.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: (2 sc, inc) x 2. (8 sts)

Rnd 3: Sc around. (8 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Component 3: The Nose

Using Golden Yellow.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, bobble stitch into the 1st ch (yarn over, insert, pull up, repeat 4 times, pull through all loops).

Fasten off. This is a tiny "pop" of color to sew onto the Snout.

Component 4: The Antlers (Make 2)

Using Golden Yellow. We want a curved crescent shape.

Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring. (4 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc, 3 sc. (5 sts)

Rnd 3: Inc, 4 sc. (6 sts)

Rnd 4: Inc, 5 sc. (7 sts)

Using Brown. We want a chubby pear shape.

Rnd 9: (Decrease for neck) (2 sc, dec) x 6. (18 sts)

Rnd 10-11: Sc around. (18 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing to the head. Stuff firmly.

Component 7: The Legs (Make 4)

Start with Deep Purple (Hooves), switch to White, then Brown.

Rnd 1: (Purple) 6 sc in magic ring. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: (Purple) Inc in every st. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: (Purple) In BLO, sc around. (12 sts)

Rnd 7-8: (Brown) Sc around. (9 sts)

Fasten off. Stuff the bottom firmly, top lightly.

Component 8: The Leafy Neck Ruff

Using Moss Green. This is worked in rows, not rounds.

Row 1: Ch 20 (ensure this fits around the neck loosely).

Row 2: Starting in 2nd ch from hook: * (sl st, ch 3, dc in same st, ch 3, sl st in same st) — skip next ch *. Repeat * to * until end.

This creates a series of small "petals" or leaves. Fasten off.

Component 9: The Tail

Using Moss Green (to match the ruff).

Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring. (4 sts)

Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 2. (6 sts)

Rnd 3: Sc around. (6 sts)

Rnd 4: (1 sc, dec) x 2. (4 sts)

Fasten off.

Assembly & Final Touches

  1. Face: Sew the White Snout to the center of the face, slightly lower than the eyes. Sew the Yellow Nose to the tip of the Snout.

  2. Head: Attach the Ears to Rnd 6 of the head. Position the Antlers slightly inward from the ears, centered on the top.

  3. Body: Sew the Head to the Body. Ensure the head is firmly attached so it doesn't wobble (velvet yarn can be slippery, use extra stitches).

  4. Limbs: Sew the four legs to the bottom of the body. To make Fable stand, pin them first to ensure balance.

  5. Greens: Wrap the Leafy Ruff around the neck and stitch the ends together at the back. Sew the Tail to the lower back.

Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My chenille yarn is "worming" (loops coming loose). How do I stop this? A: This happens when your hook is too large or tension is too loose. Drop down a hook size (e.g., from 5.0mm to 4.5mm) and yank your stitches a bit tighter than usual.

Q: Can I brush the yarn? A: No! Chenille is synthetic and can snap or bald if brushed with a pet slicker. It is already fluffy enough.

Q: How do I clean Fable? A: Spot clean with a damp cloth. Do not put velvet amigurumi in the washing machine unless you want a very sad, deflated fawn.

A Final Word

Fable is more than just a pattern; it is a lesson in texture. Once you master the slip and slide of velvet yarn, you open a door to premium plushies that customers adore. Enjoy the process of bringing this little spirit to life.
