Welcome back to the atelier, my fellow artisan. There is a special kind of magic that happens when winter's cozy silence meets the vibrant promise of summer fruit, isn't there?
Today, we are capturing that very feeling. We are breathing life into the "Strawberry Soufflé Bunny," a creation designed not just to be held, but to be hugged deeply. With her snowy plush fur and ruby-red details, she is a study in "Berry-Sweet Comfort."
🎨 About This Creation & Our Angle
You may have noticed a delightful trend sweeping the crafting world: the rise of chunky, velvet amigurumi. These creations are taking over social feeds, and for good reason—they offer immediate gratification and an irresistible texture.
This project is designed with that viral potential in mind. By using super bulky chenille yarn, we create a substantial, huggable size in a fraction of the time it takes to work with cotton. It is the perfect project for market prep or a show-stopping last-minute gift.

"To work with chenille is to sculpt with clouds; it requires a gentle hand and a trust in the fabric's own desire to be soft."
🧶 Materials & Tools Needed
To weave this creation, you will need to gather a few simple treasures. The choice of yarn here is paramount to achieving that "squishy" marshmallow look.
- Yarn: Super Bulky (Size 6) Chenille/Velvet yarn. I recommend Himalayan Dolphin Baby or Premier Parfait Chunky. You will need: White (1 skein), Ruby Red (approx. 50g), Soft Pink (approx. 30g), Buttercream (approx. 30g), and a scrap of Forest Green.
- Hook: 4.5mm or 5.0mm hook. (We use a smaller hook than recommended on the label to prevent holes).
- Eyes: 14mm or 16mm Black Safety Eyes.
- Other Materials: Fiberfill stuffing, yarn needle (large eye), stitch markers, and black embroidery thread for the nose/mouth.
💡 Abbreviations & Stitches Used
We will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
- ch - chain
- sl st - slip stitch
- sc - single crochet
- inc - increase (2 sc in one st)
- dec - decrease (invisible decrease recommended)
- blo - back loop only
- flo - front loop only
- dc - double crochet (for the hat brim)

📖 The Complete Strawberry Soufflé Pattern
Part 1: The Head (In White)
We begin with the focal point of our "Gaze of Innocence"—the oversized head.
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18 sts)
- Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24 sts)
- Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30 sts)
- Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36 sts)
- Rnd 7: (5 sc, inc) x 6 (42 sts)
- Rnds 8-15: sc in each st around (42 sts) – Build that lovely round shape!
- Rnd 16: (5 sc, dec) x 6 (36 sts)
Artisan's Note: When working with chenille yarn, the "Magic Ring" can sometimes snap if pulled too tight. Alternatively, you can Ch 2 and work your 6 sc into the second chain from the hook. It is much sturdier!
- Rnd 17: (4 sc, dec) x 6 (30 sts)
- Rnd 18: (3 sc, dec) x 6 (24 sts)
- Rnd 19: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18 sts)
Insert the safety eyes between Rounds 11 and 12, spacing them about 6 stitches apart. Stuff the head firmly but gently, shaping it as you go to ensure it stays round.
- Rnd 20: (sc, dec) x 6 (12 sts)
- Rnd 21: dec x 6 (6 sts)
Fasten off and weave in the end.
Part 2: The Legs & Body (Seamless Join)
To ensure our bunny sits perfectly, we will crochet the legs first and join them directly into the body.
Legs (Make 2) - Start in White:
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12 sts)
- Rnds 3-5: sc in each st around (12 sts)
Fasten off the first leg. Do NOT fasten off the second leg. Ch 2, then join to the first leg with a sc.
Body (Continuing from Legs):
- Rnd 6: sc 12 around first leg, sc 2 along the chain, sc 12 around second leg, sc 2 along the other side of chain (28 sts)
- Rnd 7: (6 sc, inc) x 4 (32 sts)
- Rnds 8-11: sc in each st around (32 sts) – The white tummy builds up here.
- Rnd 12: Change to Soft Pink. sc in each st around (32 sts)
- Rnd 13: (6 sc, dec) x 4 (28 sts)
- Rnd 14: sc in each st around (28 sts)
- Rnd 15: (5 sc, dec) x 4 (24 sts)
- Rnd 16: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18 sts)
- Rnd 17: sc in each st around (18 sts)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the head to the body. Stuff the body firmly, focusing on the bottom to give it a weighted, sitting feel.
Part 3: The Floppy Ears (Make 2 - White)
These ears are designed to be long and draping, framing the face with softness.
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: inc in each st around (12 sts)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18 sts)
- Rnds 4-8: sc in each st around (18 sts)
- Rnd 9: (4 sc, dec) x 3 (15 sts)
- Rnds 10-14: sc in each st around (15 sts)
- Rnd 15: (3 sc, dec) x 3 (12 sts)
- Rnds 16-18: sc in each st around (12 sts)
Do not stuff the ears. Flatten the opening and sc across both sides to close. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
Part 4: The Berry Overalls (Ruby Red)
These are made separately and slipped onto the bunny for maximum cuteness.
- Row 1: Ch 34 (measure around bunny's widest part to ensure fit), join to first ch to form a ring.
- Rnd 2-5: sc in each st around (34 sts)
- Rnd 6 (Dividing for legs): sc 17, skip remaining sts, join to first sc of this round. (17 sts). Work 2 rounds of sc for the first pant leg. Fasten off.
- Second Leg: Join yarn to the remaining 17 stitches. Work 2 rounds of sc. Fasten off.
- Bib: Join yarn to the front center of the waist. Work 6 sc across. Turn. Ch 1, 6 sc back. Repeat for 3 rows. Ch 15 for straps and sew them to the back crossed over.
Artisan's Note: To add that extra "Whisper of Charm," I like to crochet a tiny strawberry appliqué (a simple red triangle with green top) and sew it to the front of the overalls!
Part 5: The Bucket Hat (Buttercream)
- Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
- Rnd 2: inc x 6 (12)
- Rnd 3: (sc, inc) x 6 (18)
- Rnd 4: (2 sc, inc) x 6 (24)
- Rnd 5: (3 sc, inc) x 6 (30)
- Rnd 6: (4 sc, inc) x 6 (36)
- Rnds 7-10: sc around (36)
- Rnd 11 (Brim): FLO, (2 dc, inc) around to create a ruffled brim.
Add a row of Ruby Red surface slip stitches above the brim for the band.
🧵 Assembly & Final Touches
Now, we bring the soul into the creation.
- Sew the Head: Attach the head to the body. Ensure it is centered.
- Attach Ears: Sew the ears to the top of the head at Round 4 or 5. Position them slightly back so they flop forward nicely.
- Dress the Bunny: Slip the overalls onto the legs and pull them up. Cross the straps at the back and secure them.
- Face Details: Using pink yarn or embroidery thread, stitch a small "Y" shape between the eyes for the nose and mouth. Add pink blush under the eyes using real makeup or pink yarn felted on.
💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
Q: My chenille yarn keeps shedding (worming). How do I stop it?
A: This is common! Try using a slightly smaller hook to keep stitches tight. Also, quickly singe the end of the yarn with a lighter (carefully!) before starting to melt the fibers together so they don't unravel.
Q: Can I use worsted weight acrylic yarn instead?
A: Absolutely! However, the bunny will be much smaller (approx. 12-14cm). You will need to use a 2.5mm or 3.0mm hook.
💌 A Final Word
And there she is—a little drop of sweetness in a snowy world. I hope this Strawberry Soufflé Bunny brings a smile to your face and warmth to your hands. Remember, every stitch you made was a moment of time dedicated to creating joy.
Until we meet again in the atelier,
Patricia
