Dearest maker, welcome back to the atelier. Today, we step away from the purely cute and venture into the realm of the mythical.

There is a profound elegance in the serpentine form of the Eastern Dragon. Unlike their winged western cousins, these creatures are spirits of rivers and clouds, long and flowing. We shall capture that sinuous grace in miniature form. This pattern is designed to respect the specific vision of a golden-scaled guardian with a majestic royal blue mane, sized perfectly at 14cm to sit upon a desk or shelf as a lucky talisman.

🎨 About This Creation & Our Angle

This project focuses on shape manipulation. We are departing from the standard spherical doll head to create a distinct snout and an elongated body.

The challenge here is maintaining the "flow" of the dragon. We want it to look like it is gliding, even when still. The color palette—striking gold and deep blue—evokes royalty and prosperity.

To crochet a dragon is to weave a little bit of magic into the world. Treat every stitch like a scale, shielding the creature’s spirit within.

The Serpentine Body

(Worked in Golden Yellow)

Round 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6 sts)

Round 2: inc in every st around. (12 sts)

Round 4: (2 sc, inc) repeat 6 times. (24 sts)

Artisan's Note: This length creates the 14cm proportion. Stuff lightly as you go to allow the body to bend.

Round 32: (1 sc, dec) repeat 6 times. (12 sts)

Round 33: dec around. (6 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail to close the gap.

The Legs (Make 2)

Round 1: Start 6 sc in a magic ring. (6 sts)

Round 2: (1 sc, inc) repeat 3 times. (9 sts)

Rounds 3-5: sc in each st around. (9 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff very lightly.

The Antlers (Make 2)

(Worked in Royal Blue)

Round 1: Start 5 sc in a magic ring. (5 sts)

Rounds 2-4: sc in each st around. (5 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Do not stuff.

The Mane

(Worked in Royal Blue)

Row 1: Chain roughly 35 (or length of the body), turn.

Row 2: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, work (1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc) in same stitch, sl st in next stitch. Repeat across the chain to create a spiky ridge effect.

Fasten off, leaving a very long tail for sewing.

🧵 Assembly & Final Touches

Pin the Head to one end of the Body cylinder. Sew firmly.

Pin the four Legs to the underside of the Body. Two near the head, two near the tail. Ensure the dragon stands stable.

Sew the Antlers to the top of the Head, just behind the eyes.

Sew the Mane running from the back of the Head down the center of the spine to the tip of the tail.

Optional: Embroider small white fangs on the snout for detail.

💡 Tips & Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I make the body longer?

A: Absolutely. Simply repeat Round 5 of the body for as many extra rounds as you wish. Just remember to add more stuffing.

Q: How do I make the dragon poseable?

A: You can insert a pipe cleaner or craft wire into the body while stuffing. Just be sure to bend the ends of the wire inward so they do not poke through the yarn.

💌 A Final Word

There you have it—a mythical companion born from a single strand of yarn. May this dragon bring wisdom and creativity to your space. Until we meet again at the next loop.
